The Central Vermont Chamber Music Festival announces the release of its first highlight CD: Festival Harvest

"The Central Vermont Chamber Music Festival has come a long way since it was founded in 1993 by Peter Sanders, a New York cellist who grew up spending his summers in the Randolph area. An indication of just how far is its excellent New CD, "Festival Harvest," a compilation of live performances of works by Mendelssohn, Schönberg and Frank Bridge at the Chandler Center for the Arts in 2000 and 2004.

When I first heard the album, I had recently heard an excellent performance of Mendelssohn's A Major String Quintet at Vermont's justly revered Marlboro Music Festival. The same work opens this CD, and I actually preferred the Randolph performance. That's big praise."

The Woodstock Unitarian Universalist Church is the large white church with columns, on Route 4, just west of the Woodstock Green, and two doors down from the Town Hall on the right, as you are going west on Route 4 through Woodstock. If going east on Route 4 into Woodstock the church is located on the left just after crossing the iron bridge near the Recreation Center, and before reaching the Green. Parking is limited in the rear of the church and is also available on the street.

A Special Event - Erik Friedlander
Block Ice & Propane

"Block Ice & Propane" (video link) is a vivid musical road journal, a collection of pieces that conjure the feel of endless interstate drives, small-town truck stops, and the wide, empty stretches of the American landscape. Drawing deeply from American roots and folk traditions, Erik Friedlander transforms these influences into something uniquely his own.
The project is grounded in his memories of childhood cross-country trips with his family, and that sense of movement, distance, and discovery runs through the music. These personal recollections are woven together with visual elements: photographs by his father, the renowned photographer Lee Friedlander, and films by Bill Morrison, whose work often explores time, memory, and decay. Together, they create a layered portrait of American travel - part documentary, part dream.
On the cello, Friedlander uses extraordinary finger-picking technique and resonant, open tunings that are more commonly associated with guitar and folk styles. This approach gives the instrument a rugged, earthy quality, yet the music remains spacious and lyrical. The result is a kind of "new American cello music" that feels both familiar and surprising: plain-spoken in its melodic language, yet emotionally rich, reflective, and quietly haunting.
